Hygeine can be a hard one. We've all smelt bad on the trails - but we're here to save the day (or try to) with some tips for smelling like a daisy when you're out there.
Personal Hygiene
Hand Hygiene:
- Carry hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol for when soap and water are unavailable. Use it before eating, after using the bathroom, and after handling shared equipment.
- If water is available, wash hands with biodegradable soap, as it's less harmful to the environment. Ecover produce a great range of planet-friendly hygeine and cleaning supplies.
Body Hygiene:
- Bring wet wipes or a small towel for quick clean-ups. Opt for biodegradable wipes if possible.
- If you have access to water, and where possible, take a quick camp shower using a solar shower or a bucket. Again, use biodegradable soap away from water sources to prevent contamination. We highly rate the Flextail Shower.
Oral Hygiene:
- Brush your teeth with minimal water; you can use a dry brush and then rinse with a small amount of water. Spit the toothpaste into a bag or far from water sources.
Hair:
- If showers aren't possible, use dry shampoo or baby powder to keep hair from looking greasy.
Clothing and Gear
Clothing:
- Wear moisture-wicking garments to reduce sweat and odor - remember, foul smell comes from bacteria feeding on the salts in your sweat. So the less you swear, the less you'll smell!
- Change clothes regularly if possible.
- Keep an extra set of clothes in a waterproof bag to ensure you have clean options.
Foot Care:
- Change socks daily to prevent blisters and fungal infections. Consider foot powder if you're prone to sweaty feet.
Gear Hygiene:
- Clean cooking utensils and dishes with hot water and biodegradable soap well away from water sources. Dry them thoroughly to avoid mold.
Waste Management
Human Waste:
- Use a portable toilet or dig a "cathole" at least 200 feet away from water, trails, and campsites for human waste. The hole should be 6-8 inches deep, covered after use.
Carry out all toilet paper or use leaves or snow if you're in an area where it's acceptable to leave natural materials.
Trash:
- Pack out all trash, including food scraps. If you're in bear country, be extra careful with food waste.
General Tips
- Water Purification: Always carry a method to purify water, whether it's tablets, a filter, or boiling.
- Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, wear hats, and sunglasses. Sunburn can be a hygiene issue if skin blisters or peels.
- Insect Repellent: Protect against bites, which can lead to infections or discomfort.
Adapt to Conditions: If water is scarce, conserve it for essential uses. If it's cold, ensure you stay warm to avoid issues like hypothermia, which can compromise your immune system.
By following these tips, you can maintain a reasonable level of hygiene while camping, respecting both your health and the environment. Remember, the principle of "leave no trace" should guide all your actions in the wilderness.
